Cartridge Ortofon Wind Field

Ortofon a pickup (2975 euro) is dedicated to the longtime chief developer. A worthy project, because it is based on via wind field experience.

The times they are A-changin’, this Bob Dylan song title fits well to the traditional manufacturer of Ortofon. So new investors at the pickup factory in Denmark bought himself, which resulted in some course corrections. And age left the developer traffic controller via the ship’s wind field. What animated the new Responsible for development Leif Johannsen to honor this great man of pickup construction in the form of a top MC off push button.

And so it is not surprising now then, that much of what his namesake has introduced in the past 30 years for Ortofon, is also included in the wind. So he of course has the metal casing, which is sintered after the “metal injection moulding” procedures and without any screws. Per wind field used it for the first time in the Jubilee (test 1/99).

The special damping system of the coil Assembly with two different rubbers and an intermediate metal plate has introduced 20 MK II in 1979 wind field, however, with the MC. Here, however, Jacob perfected the material of the rubber, making an excellent sampling of 100 microns at 315 Hz possible without but starting up a distinctive high-frequency response. The metal plate between the gums is quite “exotic”, as touts the product information, because of pure gold, as Jacob here wanted to reach a high density.

With its replicant 100 cut fans from the MC know the diamond needle 3000 Mk III or the MC of 5000. Yet here Jacob can do precision work, so that the diamond is now more finely polished, which decreases the friction on the Groove side and thus the distortion decrease.

When the cantilever one has set, in contrast to the Vienna (12/04) of the accent line, not on unusual materials such as Ruby, but on a rigid tubes made of boron.

That Jacob took over the generator, one can understand, however. Finally he is very effective through the thick, hollow-drilled neodymium magnet, which wraps so the coil from 99.999999% (8 S) pure and gold-plated copper, which he delivers enough output voltage despite very small coil.

Before we went to the actual listening test, the tester first optimized needle azimuth as the wind field, which enables three surveys to adjust these in glued headshell. What is a good thing, but in very small headshell or those with many holes also can backfire.

In the reference turntable Linn LP 12 SE with radical and EKOS SE (test in this issue) very well fit the wind field and impressed after the painstaking adjustment with an excessive detail. So, he distanced the Jubilee (1/99) also from the State. Because of the wind field was sharper outline not only individual instruments, but more clearly convey also the articulation of singers. In addition, the figure in tutti passages the wind field remained stable.

Therefore, the comparison with the Vienna was rather exciting (12/04). Because here were different characters. As presented to the Vienna print full and gave singers such as Reiner Süß in Carl Orff’s Opera “The Kluge” (Edition Phönix) more volume and timpani more enforcement power, during the wind field the recording room not only larger but also more authentic constituted, by the subsequent echoes were understandable.

Overall was the acoustic action with the wind field minimal clearer and transparent, while the Vienna looked more to the color palette. And if the tester then stated at the Vienna more joy of playing, he countered wind field with discreetly shining heights. So it was called tie then, because each personal preference will be decisive. Anyway, succeeded Jacob shiny the appreciation of his predecessor.
