Review: ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 Tablet

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 is considered by many to be the smaller brother of Nexus 7, Google’s official tablet. In essence, the gadget was created to fight for the market of entry of this category of electronic, but its configuration and its price place the device in the dispute of the intermediate segment.

Its highlights are the quad-core processor, the 1 GB of RAM and the 3,950 mAh battery with promised autonomy of up to ten hours. The model landed in Brazil  in October 2013 with the suggested price of R $ 799. Nowadays, it can be found for slightly smaller values according to THERELIGIONFAQS.

Originally, its direct competitors are the HP Slate 7 , the Acer Iconia B1 , the Positive Mini  and the Fonepad , of the own ASUS. Featuring a cool look, performance consistent with its set-up, good range of unique apps, a battery that catches up with a pulled routine and satisfactory storage space, the MeMO Pad HD 7 proved to be cost-effective.

Technical specifications

Simple but elegant

ASUS employs rounded lines to give the MeMO Pad HD 7 a sleek, modern look. The device we tested follows the design patterns of some of the most popular models in this niche, with the entire front in black color and the back in varied tones – in our case it was dark gray.

The back housing of the gadget is coated with a rigid and matte plastic. In addition to getting a sturdy feel, this combination of features helps reduce those traditional finger marks left by the natural oiliness of our skin.

The finishes of the MeMO Pad HD 7 are flawless and do not leave any burrs or fissures in their fittings. Although not very thin(1.08 cm thick) or the lightest in its class(302 grams), the device provides an ergonomic and secure grip. Thus, the risk of falls is lower and you do not tire the hand even when holding the device for long periods.

This ASUS product still has a peculiarity: its buttons are not exactly on its side. They are positioned in a way that are facing towards your back. In particular, we like this because it facilitates access to the buttons when the gadget is held with both hands. However, we must admit that this position can be uncomfortable to pick up the tablet with only one of them.

Finally, the positioning of the headphone and micro USB inputs on the top right of its structure does not interfere to play with the device horizontally. With this, you can enjoy your games with the gadget recharging and avoid disturbing the people around you without those cables and connectors in the middle of the fingers.

Excellent touch response

Another component of the MeMO Pad HD 7 that pleased us was its screen. It, which has an angle of 170 °. This level is good for your category and allows content displayed to show no sharp distortions, affecting the display of what is being displayed with small movements.

The display has embedded IPS technology, which promotes optimal color reproduction. In this sense, the device also has the Splendid app that allows you to adjust the intensity of the color scheme. This way, you are able to adapt the performance of the screen according to the type of content to be played.

We also have nothing to complain about in response to ringtones. The MeMO Pad HD 7 multitouch has support for up to 10 simultaneous touch points, which is especially important when playing. In addition, we believe that its 7 inches are a nice size for both reading and navigation or gambling.

Enjoying a sound

The sound system of the MeMO Pad HD 7 is more than satisfactory. During our tests, he presented a great three-dimensional perspective, a very relevant feature for watching movies and enjoying the best games. Sound reproduction has proven to be flawless, especially when using headphones, while maintaining sound clarity even at full volume.

By removing the accessory, but maintaining the same volume setting, you could notice small hisses in the bass – but nothing that will drastically affect your sound experience. And such performance is not achieved without the use of specific technologies.

In the case of the MeMO Pad HD 7, this is because of SonicMaster, a feature that uses sophisticated audio processing techniques, coupled with the presence of metal-alloy speakers and larger-than-conventional resonance chambers – increasing power, The fidelity and balance of sound.

Enough energy for everyday life

The MeMO Pad HD 7’s 3,950 mAh battery is one of the great promises reinforced by ASUS in all of its promotional content. In practice, as expected and happens with virtually all electronic devices, we can not achieve the autonomy promised by the manufacturer.

With maximum screen brightness, volume at 50% and WiFi connection on, we performed a 720p video playback test. The estimated result was the consumption of the entire load in approximately 7 hours. The value is below the 10 hours announced by the company in”ideal” conditions, but we can consider that it was within the average for its category.

Remaining space

With the popularization of content with ever greater image qualities, the most common storage spaces among electronic devices have less and less “perceived value”. In other words, you get to put less stuff with the same space intended for your documents, videos, pictures and music.

Although the 16 GB version of the MeMO Pad HD 7 we reviewed is not surprising, ASUS was concerned about enabling the expansion of this repository. First adding the support for micro SD memory cards, allowing the storage of another 32 GB. And that’s not all.

The company offers a free one-year license of the 16 GB plan in its online storage service, the ASUS Webstorage. That adds up to 12 GB of internal space(the other 4 GB is meant for the OS and its fundamental features) to the memory card and web service, you have about 60 GB to save your digital things.

Exclusive Apps

As required by the Search Giant, manufacturers who choose to use Android need to make changes to the interface and functions of the platform. To do so, ASUS has decided to invest heavily in the development of unique applications that provide a more practical and efficient interaction with your product.

One such software is SuperNote, which enables you to create notes and reminders using more than just text. With it, you can insert photos, videos, audio files and customize the background.

For editing, organizing and sharing your photo albums, MeMO Pad HD 7 offers the Studio application. Still with regard to audiovisual production, the gadget has the Story program, which enables the creation of illustrated and animated stories based on its collection of photographs and images.

When it comes to communication, the highlight is with the BuddyBuzz app. It brings together the activities and notifications of all your profiles in today’s top social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, in one place.

Small details make the difference

The appearance of the MeMO Pad HD 7 may be beautiful, but it could be even more attractive if the designers had a little more care when designing the design of this model. The main criticism we have to make is about the fact that the display does not take advantage of the edges of its structure.

The space between the end of the screen and the end of the frame is large and makes this area completely useless. If these parts were better utilized, in addition to having a more sophisticated and homogeneous look, the display could be a little larger or the size of the device be reduced – which would consequently make it lighter and easier to carry and hold.

Where’s the phone?

As mentioned earlier, the sound quality of the MeMO Pad HD 7 is great. But one thing annoyed us about the sound experience of this model: the lack of a headset. The device is not accompanied by this accessory, ie if you want to listen to music, play or watch videos without expanding the sound for those on your side, you need to buy a handset.

Could be better

If the tactile response and color reproduction of the screen of this model are excellent, its resolution is not surprising. The WXGA quality(1280×800 pixels) is below expectations, especially for those who enjoy watching movies in HD or higher resolutions and make the most of the latest and most elaborate games.

Another thing that bothered us in the display of the device was the high index of reflection. With this, the visualization of what is presented on screen is cluttered significantly in very bright places. In addition, its illumination may not be enough outdoors and make it difficult to read, watch a video or play.

Little more than the basics

Regarding the main camera of the MeMO Pad HD 7, which has 5 megapixels of resolution, we can only say that it is just another accessory. The quality of the images is unreasonable and satisfactory only in outdoor environments or with lighting suitable for photographs.

The lack of a built-in flash makes the device not suitable for capturing in dark places. The granulation of the images is very evident in these cases. Even the recordings that are theoretically made in 720p have caused us a bit of an awkwardness and when they are passed to the computer they do not seem to have such quality.

ASUS attempted to circumvent these problems by providing multi-featured camera software. The great attractions in this sense are the panoramic photo functions and the HDR. However, the app still has multiple filters that can customize the image at the time of capture and save work with later edits. It also allows you to configure various aspects, such as white balance, ISO, shutter and anti-vibration mechanism.

Performance tests

As usual in our electronics analyzes, we performed a series of tests with the intention of ascertaining the performance of the analyzed model. The MeMO Pad HD 7 was tested by the following benchmarks: 3D Mark(Ice Storm Unlimited), AnTuTu Benchmark 4, GFX Bench(T-Rex HD Off Screen and T-Rex HD On Screen) and Vellamo Mobile Benchmark(HTML5 and Metal ).

Briefly, what we can say is that the results achieved by this tablet from ASUS are in accordance with your hardware configuration. In other words, its components work smoothly as much as possible and deliver a processing potential within the expected.

Below, by way of illustration, you can see some comparative graphs between the MeMO Pad HD 7 and some of the smartphones and tablets that we have already analyzed and that had the closest performances of it in each test individually

In practice

The performance perception of the MeMO Pad HD 7 in practice was satisfactory and the gadget did not disappoint us, even when we put it to work heavy. Accompanying our work routine, it ran a number of programs simultaneously(including music and video players, social media clients, browsers, digital players, app stores, among others) without showing any signs of slowing down or crashing.

Taking advantage of the presence of a quad-core CPU and a considerable GPU, we have made the ASUS tablet run several games, of different genres and levels of hardware requirement. From simpler titles such as Flappy Bird and Temple Run 2 to more robust games, including Real Racing 3, FIFA 14 and Blitz Brigade, the MeMO Pad HD 7 ran all smoothly.

Worth it?

When officially announced on Tupiniquins lands, the MeMO Pad HD 7 cost $ 799. With almost five months in Brazilian stores, this value is already beginning to fall. The model can already be found on the internet, in reliable e-commerce stores, for prices that reach almost R $ 700(searches made on February 13, 2014).

This amount is on average 100 to 200 reais more expensive than its direct competitors originally intended for the entry segment. However, the ASUS product has more powerful configuration than all of them.

In this same price range you can find, for example, the MSI Primo 81 , the Philco 9A-B111A, the Semp Toshiba TA 0703G and, especially the Galaxy Tab 3 , in its version with WiFi only and with 8 GB of Internal storage. Even compared to Samsung’s gadget, the MeMO Pad HD 7 has a more processor-friendly interface – and this can make the difference when it comes to multitasking and running games.

The design of the handset from ASUS is handsome, it has proven to withstand a relatively heavy routine and has a good storage space. Although your camera is unsatisfactory and some details weigh the negatives, the overall evaluation of MeMO Pad HD 7 is positive.

With this, the MeMO Pad HD 7 shows that it owes nothing to any model of the segment in which it proposes to compete. If you have a little more money saved and looking for a functional tablet, it pays to study the acquisition of this device and compare it with other devices that you have in mind.
