Samsung Galaxy NX Camera Test

Samsung Expands its spiegelloses NX system upwards: the new top model Samsung Galaxy NX assumes the camera technique of the proven NX300, but in addition has the capabilities of a Smartphone – Android 4.2.2 and faster Internet connection via Wi-Fi and mobile networks of the third or fourth generation.

Long ago, the integrated WLAN module for wireless data transfer in the NX system has established itself; now Samsung goes a step further and takes the leading position of its Smartphone business this advantage: the new top model Galaxy NX has also the communicative skills of a Smartphone with Android 4.2.2 in addition to the photographic qualities of a spiegellosenAPS-C removable optics camera 20 megapixels.

Closely related to smartphones

While the Samsung Galaxy NX can exchange data via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or alternatively via mobile networks of the third and fourth generations (3 G and LTE). Close to the Smartphone it proves also with her for a system camera unusually large 4.8-inch touchscreen, which unfortunately displaces the most classic controls, and the tiny slot microSDXC cards.

Thanks to GPS module, the Samsung Galaxy s can capture NX geo data and locate recordings. However, there is not a direct function of the phone, if necessary, you must help yourself so with IP telephony (Skype). It is a camera special in many ways, is reflected on the price: 1.500 Euro including Kit zoom 3.5-5.6 / 18-55 mm OIS and Photoshop Lightroom 5; Since the NX300 smooth costs 700 euros of less – despite similar photo technology.

To get from here to the record mode, either press the shutter button or touches the “camera”-icon (above).

Two processors, large battery

So that performance does not suffer from the combination of camera and Tablet functionality, Samsung in the Galaxy NX installed two processors: a 1.6 GHz quad core for Android and the new Engine DRIMe IV for the camera signal processing. With us, the Galaxy NX usually quickly responded to input moved quickly between the levels of Android and left also after shooting pictures and videos do not unduly long wait.

Compared to the Samsung NX300 a significantly larger lithium-ion battery with 4.360 mAh instead of 1,130 mAh is at the Samsung Galaxy NX also used. The Additional battery capacity should cover in particular the consumption with connectivity features, Android and the large touch screen, according to the manufacturer, but also about 30 percent are used for longer life. With us the Galaxy NX lasted about two days without reloading – with switched to GPS function, but extended periods of rest. Striking: After relatively short operating time heat radiates tangible of the touch screen.

Plastic case with handle

The Samsung Galaxy NX made of moulded plastic has a standing over almost 3 cm, rubberized grip. This, it is safely and comfortably in the hand. Because of the 4.8 inch monitor, it is unusually wide (14.4 cm) and high (12 cm), so it is solid at first glance for a camera. That it didn’t quite seem to fit apart from the handle, flat case design (2.6 cm).

The large, tightly integrated HD Display (1280 x 720 pixels) provides a very crisp, clear, live view Preview. The display can be seen however difficult at larger angles and brighter environment. In such cases, the good electronic 100% viewfinder with 0,68-facher magnification comes just at the right. It switches automatically as soon as the eye approaches the viewfinder insight.

Furthermore are the pop up Flash with LZ8 and the hot shoe. Instead of a stand-alone charger, Samsung Board power supply can be used for filling the battery only in conjunction with the camera.

By touching the “camera”-icons on the touch screen gets the user to the record mode.

Exposure and auto focus

Exposure metering and autofocus little changed compared with the NX300: it remains the TTL system with 221 fields and a hybrid auto-focus, the 247-point contrast measurement combined with a phase detection on 105 fields in the middle of the recording sensor.

The problems that the hybrid auto focus of the NX300 has with weak light, seem largely fixed; in the test the Galaxy NX itself in the dark found the correct focus comparatively reliable . This works but also somewhat more slowly, sparked in the test at 1,000 lux after 0.45 seconds, in darkened surroundings after 0.55 s.

For comparison: The NX300 needs 0.31/0.38 s. image series processed the Galaxy NX with up to 5.4 B/s – also the a climbdown NX300 (7.7 B / s). The same applies to the switch on delay, which increases from 1.2 to 2.4 s.

The gear leads to the menu, the thumbnail links below to display mode. Right, the virtual shutter button for photo and video.

Video function

To record Full HD Videos , the user must press only the separate, marked in red shutter button or touch the video icon on the touch screen. Manual exposure settings remain active here. Although the first few seconds of many clips due to the pumping of autofocus are unusable, then the Samsung draws but remarkably accurately and unobtrusively the sharpness.

The full HD videos work naturally and above average, sometimes even overly sharp. Lights and shadows appear good features; fine-grained noise is at low ISO numbers cannot be seen. However, large, moving brightness variations result in dark areas of the image, and on fine structures of text urverluste .

Touch screen

Who is familiar with the handling of classic cameras, will have to change drastically with the Galaxy NX: function buttons and dials are in short supply, instead almost everything about the place touch screen – it takes time, but meets Smartphone owners who find “their” Android environment .

Single concession to those who prefer classical controls: the iFn button on the left side of the lens, which makes it more quickly accessible at least exposure compensation, ISO number and where appropriate aperture and shutter (or Programmshift), and the somewhat too smooth mode dial. To select full -, program, Aperture – and shutter aperture, a manual mode, a user-defined profile and scene modes are available.

On one of the five menu tab, Samsung has brought together important recording parameters.

To open the menu of Samsung Galaxy NX needs of the users of the touch screen as well to make there settings . On one side of the menu, Samsung introduces important recording parameters such as white balance, Flash mode, resolution, image format, auto focus and exposure measurement method together – graphically prepared as a control monitor.

Less practically , however, the scroll lists the other four menu tabs for photo -, video -, connectivity and basic settings. Also, not all menu items for everyone are self explanatory. For example, exposure preview is disabled by “framing mode” – important for Studio Flash. The option to format the memory card not found here, by the way, this is done at the level of the Android.

Image quality

The NX300 swept neatly ColorFoto test, now the Samsung Galaxy NX can connect seamlessly to this performance. Less is the border resolution in the foreground, which remains LP/Bra (ISO 6,400) slightly below the level of the NX300 1,508 (ISO 100) up to 1,169.

Thanks to the iFn button on the lens, ISO number, exposure compensation and, where appropriate, Aperture, as well as reverse shot time can be set quickly – without touch screen.

Rather, the new Samsung with superior Dead leaves values of maximum 1623 scores LP/bra and a balanced relationship between low noise (0.4 0.8 UN up to ISO 1,600) and moderate texture loss (0.5-0.7 kurtosis up to ISO 1600). What is a above-average momentum, falling from 10.0 apertures at ISO 100 on 9.3 apertures at ISO 1,600.

Review conclusion

Remarkably, what Samsung lately in the JPEG processing progress: actually the 1,450 euro Galaxy NX makes a similarly convincing image quality from the 20-megapixel sensor as the only three-month-old NX300; even at ISO 1,600, the new still respectable results.

Haptic approaches the Samsung not quite up to competitors such as the Fujifilm FinePix X-Pro 1 . But it offers highlights such as the 4.8-inch monitor, the large viewfinder, the Android system, fast data transfer via Wi-Fi and G3/LTE cellular network, GPS and the useful feature of full-HD video.

The battery life is similar in spite of the many plug-ins with the typical system cameras. As a shortcoming, however, we evaluate the touchscreen-heavy operating concept. I’m glad that there is at least the iFn button on the lens and a mode dial. Total: buy a hint system camera.
