This Tour stage kicks off in Ypres, it has partly to do with celebrating the Tour de France during the first world war, that began a hundred years ago. The area around Ypres was in this war, the scene of a horrific trench warfare. The city of Ypres was destroyed almost completely in the battles which raged deaths was estimated at half a million people. Ypres has become synonymous with the horrors of the first world war, and there are in the city as monuments and military cemeteries, where people still daily recalls that war.

The finish on this stage is the Cobbles of Arenberg Porte du Hainaut. The name Arenberg is obviously very familiar to cycling fans, because this is a place where almost every year crossing the classic Paris-Roubaix. ?? Cobblestones in Tour de France
When it is notified that a kasseienrit over the course of the next Tour is recorded, now often causes much controversy. Many wonder: hear the cobblestones or in the modern Tour de France? Is the risk of falls and punctures too big? Can be done by the introduction of such a ride factor?? n?? Division?? to play an important role in the overall standings in the Tour?
In the past it was so?? discussion of course not, because when a large part of the road was paved in France and it was perfectly normal to discuss it in a car. But even after the vast majority of roads are paved, the Tour organization every few years on the Cobbles to keep out. Legendary is the example kasseienrit in the Tour de France in 1980, in which Joop Zoetemelk sometimes Tour all seemed to be lost, but eventually he managed to win the final standings in the Tour. For the Tour of 2014 2010 was Tour last Tour where a kasseienrit was recorded. Even then completed phase in Arenberg Porte du Hainaut. Hushovd won the ride. Frank Schleck, at the time one of the leading classification riders fell that day and broke his collarbone.
Many classification riders has especially prepared for kasseienrit in the Tour de France 2014. Several types have been extensively explored. Alejandro Valverde was preparing for the kasseienrit in the Tour even a reason to be in the early spring of 2014 in the Flemish cobblestone matches. The Spaniard showed, however, that he is the art of riding over Cobbles have been mastered.
The start of this kasseienrit is 13:45 in Ypres. The total length of the trip is 155.5 kilometers. The first cobblestone drivers after 87 km. It is expected that the riders start at four o’clock on the first cobbled section. The intermediate sprint today is in Templeuve, after 97 kilometers (58.5 kilometers from the finish. Tour organizers are counting on the end date for this trip around 05:15 to take place. Here you will find all the cobbled sections included in during this stage. Cobbled lanes in the 5th stage of the Tour of 2014
Here you will find, in good time, the complete start list with numbers in the Tour de France 2014.
It is difficult to predict who the big favorite for kasseienrit. Firstly, because the mileage cobblestones in this trip is much lower than in a true cobblestone classic and so many more riders will be able to survive this number of cobblestones in the peloton. On the other hand, several large cobblestone specialists who could force a decision on these strips required to enslave this ride for GC riders in their teams.
A realistic scenario is that eventually a sprinter who can run well over cobblestones, will win this trip. Peter Sagan, for that matter, definitely a contender, but it’s certainly true for Degenkolb. The German sprinter André Greipel is usually well over cobblestones vehicles and must therefore be counted among the leading contenders for victory at this stage.
